Nayeli Román is proving that dreams can come true – even when a workplace injury permanently impacts your family.
It’s a message she intends share with audiences across the country as a 2026 national ambassador for Kids’ Chance of America.
“I was still a child when my father was brutally attacked by a co-worker,” Nayeli says. “He continues to suffer from physical pain, anxiety and depression, making it impossible for him to work.”
If Nayeli had any hope of attending college, scholarship support would be essential. “I’m the second oldest of five children,” she explains. “My older brother was already in college when I was accepted to San José State University. We didn’t know how our family could get by with two of us in college.”
Nayeli’s search for scholarships for single-earner families led her to Kids’ Chance. With the organization’s support, she was able to earn a double bachelor’s degree in Theatre Arts and Radio, Television and Film. Two of her brothers have since become Kids’ Chance scholars as well.
Nayeli graduated in 2024 and began an internship with the Contra Costa County government, near her home in Pittsburg,California. When she is not at the office supporting the county’s subsidized childcare program, she is auditioning and performing throughout the Bay Area.
“I sing for many political and community events, including San Francisco’s Fleet Week, the Port Chicago Weekend celebrations, Northern California Carpenters Union events, initiatives by the Oscar Grant Foundation, The National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc., and various chapters of the NAACP,” she says. “I have performed for audiences of over 35,000 people.”
Nayeli was also featured in a commercial that highlights business opportunities available in the City of Pittsburg. “People always stop me and ask for pictures or to sign things for them,” she says. “It makes my heart smile to know my artistry is making an impact on those around me.”
Her career is also about to go national, with a faith-based independent film project being produced by ROANN films that will be available for streaming in the near future.
Joining the Kids’ Chance National Ambassador program was an easy “yes” for Nayeli. “I love the idea of traveling to new places, meeting new people and supporting and inspiring kids who are facing enormous hurdles because of a parent’s workplace injury or death.
“I want other students to know that they can achieve their dreams, and that they don’t have to go it alone,” she continues. “There is a Kids’ Chance organization in every state that is ready to transform the future for every child whose family suffers a workplace tragedy. And that’s a beautiful thing.”
