Questions & Answers 1. What is KIDS’ CHANCE, Inc.? KIDS' CHANCE, Inc. is an educational scholarship program established in 1988 for the children of workers who have been seriously injured or killed in work-related accidents. KIDS' CHANCE in Georgia is sponsored by the Workers' Compensation Section of the Georgia Bar. 2. Who is eligible for a scholarship? Students, between the ages of 16 and 25, whose parent has been permanently or catastrophically injured or killed in an employment-related accident are eligible. To qualify for a Georgia scholarship, the parent must have been injured while working for a Georgia employer or as a self-employed resident of Georgia. KIDS' CHANCE scholarships are also available in 26 other states (please see our website for a listing of states with similar programs). 3. What is the criteria for a scholarship? The parent's death or injury must have resulted in a substantial decline in family income, and the student must meet acceptable academic standards. 4. When may a student apply for a scholarship? KIDS' CHANCE, Inc. scholarships are awarded throughout the year as funds are available. They are awarded, if approved, in the order in which completed application files are received. 5. What is the duration of a KIDS’ CHANCE scholarship? The scholarship is for one year or less. The applicant must maintain acceptable grades each term. Recipients may reapply at the end of their scholarships for additional help. Renewals are contingent upon the availability of funds. 6. How can funds be used? A scholarship award varies for college or technical schools and depends on the needs and expenses of the individual student. An award supplements other scholarships and grants such as HOPE and PELL Grants. Funds may be used for educational necessities. A high school scholarship is designed to supplement the income of the family to compensate for monies the student would otherwise earn by dropping out of school to work. 7. How many KIDS’ CHANCE scholarships have been awarded? As of May 2007, Georgia has awarded 561 scholarships. 2006 disbursements totaled $209,643.00. 8. Who founded KIDS’ CHANCE and why was it begun? KIDS' CHANCE was begun in response to seeing the great need for helping children of injured workers to continue their educations. The founder of KIDS' CHANCE, Bob Clyatt, shares the story of his inspiration and the work that was shared by many other dedicated persons to make the organization a reality. 9.
